The following article was published by the New York Times. The newspaper did not print an author name:
Is there really a Mutant Problem?
It is fitting that today is Halloween, when I wish to bring up the discussion of the mutant "problem". Was it not during this time where witches were hunted for, and many innocents were killed in the blind prejudice of the people?
There is no problem with the mutants. It is a problem in society that has been a part of this world since the first stone was thrown in the ancient times. We as a people have come to believe a concept in which one person or species is better than another.
But is this true? Is there really a superior race?
Magneto, the founder of the Brotherhood of Mutants, believes so. The core foundation in his belief system is that the evolution of the mutant gene in the human race is an act of God, no specific religion, and/or nature, taking the creation of man and moving them to their next biological level.
Is this something to fear? No. It is science. It is nature. It is the way that the world has been since it's creation. If we did not evolve, we would still be apes, or the step below being the amoebas from the ocean.
However, racism has been bred into our species as well. The fear of things we do not understand. The fear of people that are not like us. It is our fear that leads to the anger and hate. It is the ignorance of those which you do not understand that starts that fear.
Charles Xavier, in his vision to teach young children with the genetic evolution, stressed one important factor to his students: acceptance. To learn control, to teach those who do not understand, and create harmony between the two genetic levels of the human race.
To force this acceptance only fuels the fear. To force evolution and condemn those who are homo-sapien and not homo-superior is ludicrous. Who is one to choose the child that will be evolved, and the one that will not? That is not a man's decision, but that of nature and/or God.
But to treat those who have evolved as a threat, to force them to expose themselves to registration on a public level, will only lead to tragedy. There are as many criminals who are mutant as there are those who are not. It is not a genetic factor, but that rearing and environment.
Senator Kelly uses the example of the young girl who can walk through walls. He makes you fear her in asking what will stop her from walking into a bank vault, or your home. What will stop her is the world she lives in. Will you alter that young girl's mind to be a criminal by telling her she is one before she even commits a single crime?
What is to stop that young girl from walking into a collapsed building and looking for survivors? What is to stop her from helping a SWAT team enter a building through a wall during a hostage situation where all the doors are guarded?
Every child is born with a clean slate. It is how they are raised, how the world interacts with them, and how they are made to feel about themselves which will determine the destiny of any child, mutant or human.
These mutant wars, the Brotherhood attacks, the Registration acts... think of their affect on the children. Is this the world we wish for them to grow up in? Is this the stimuli we wish for them to absorb as they are forming their sense of self?
If you want peace, there is only one way you can achieve it. And that is through knowledge. Understanding. Only then, when ignorance is overcome, will you be able to find peace.
The author, who wishes to remain nameless, asks for those who wish to debate to write letters to this press in care of "Mutant Debate", which will be considered for the next piece. The views of this editorial are not related to those of the New York Times.
OOC: This is what Pietro is going to be doing for awhile. He's not in touch with anyone in the world at this point, so he has no idea what's been going on in RP. He also keeps the work anon as so it can't be linked to him.
